Dr. Sumner Fishbein is an ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.) who has practiced in Augusta, Georgia, since 1973. He is a native of Rhode Island, and received his undergraduate degree from the university of Rhode Island. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine: did his internship at Maimonides Medical Center, and then served two years of active duty as a General Medical Officer, one year of which he was stationed in South Korea. He did his Ophthalmology Residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and a year Glaucoma Fellowship at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston. Following his fellowship, he moved to Augusta, where he entered private practice and was appointed Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at MCG. He teaches glaucoma and surgery and subsequently was appointed Associate Clinical Professor of ophthalmology. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has served as an Associate Examiner for the Board. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, member of the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, and member and past president of the Richmond County Medical Society and the Medical Association of Georgia.
He is a member of the Congregation Children of Israel where he was on the Board for twenty years and a past president. He has also been on the board and past president of the Augusta Federation-of Jewish Charities. He plays the oboe. He has played in the American Academy of Ophthalmology Chamber Orchestra and the Augusta Symphony. He has also served as President of the Augusta Symphony League. He has published articles on Glaucoma Research and has also conducted courses in glaucoma at the Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting. He is a member of the American Glaucoma Society. He and his wife Joan have one daughter. Dr. Fishbein practices medical ophthalmology with specialty interest in glaucoma.
